Stop taking selfies. Yes you have a great face and yes it gets a lot of “likes” but we are not as obsessed with you as you are. The new selfie is a flat lay.
A flat lay is a picture of several items organized on a flat surface and photographed from directly overhead. Currently, the hashtag #flatlay has over a million posts on Instagram and more are going up every day. However, the method predates Instagram and can be traced several years back to Tumblr; where legitimate photographers got creative with their “things”.
To ensure your flat lays don’t look like a mess on the floor, make sure you leave a deliberate space between all of your objects. The image needs to be balanced and have a curated feel. Use natural light whenever possible and at all costs avoid having your shadow in the image.
Give us, and your face, a break and put some variety in your social media with a flat lay.
